We successfully tested four collection models including bins, community drives, agents, and repairer-led aggregation — proving that e-waste collection can work at scale in Uganda.
Within 6 months of the pilot, over 3,270 kg of ICT e-waste was formally collected and tracked, with an additional 6,000+ kg identified through informal channels.
The pilot established a fully functional digital traceability system, enabling real-time tracking of e-waste from collection to storage to final disposal using QR coded E-Bins, ePOS, and mobile tools and a dedicated reporting software.
This demonstrated that data-driven e-waste management is operationally feasible anywhere — laying the foundation for a national platform.
Over 600 individuals were trained and onboarded, including agents, technicians, and institutional teams, with 97 repair technicians & informal e-waste collectors directly empowered as part of the collection ecosystem.
The pilot validated that the informal repair sector is a critical engine for collection, refurbishment, and livelihoods when properly integrated into formal systems.
Through radio, community drives, and public campaigns, the initiative reached over 800,000 people, building national awareness on responsible e-waste disposal.
The pilot confirmed that awareness alone is not enough — participation increases significantly when combined with accessible collection points and incentives.

Uganda hosted regional policymakers, regulators, and international stakeholders to advance discussions on e-waste regulation, Extended Producer Responsibility, and circular economy frameworks, reinforcing the country’s growing leadership in sustainable ICT and electronic waste management across Africa.
